Hostas planted in 1999. In the beginning, the back yard was a swamp. The
field drain tiles from when it had been a producing apple orchard had been
destroyed and there was about 15 inches of standing water all summer. It
took me almost 5 years to get swales installed which fed properly into
a drop box. By the end of the summer, I had about 50 varieties of hosta
planted in faerie circles in one big bed ... that eliminated one of the
poison ivy's hiding places in one part of the yard.
